Durham Dances - Kristin Clotfelter!

I literally cannot believe this shot Kristin!

I literally cannot believe this shot Kristin!

Kristin and I met up at the intersection of Fuller and Corporation St. in Durham. With the immense impact that railroads had on Durham I wanted to include them in the book somehow. I was excited when Kristin was interested in the idea and mentioned this location. It turned out to be incredible! We took some shots in the woods with the end of the railroad. I was intrigued by this railroad structure (that used to raise and lower an arm across the streets or track) and asked Kristin to climb up (carefully)! One of my favorite things about working with dancers is their sense of adventure! Up she went and we made some amazing shots - the sky was appropriately dramatic and the sun peeked out just a bit to give us some dramatic highlights. I hope you enjoy the photos and learning a bit more about Kristin below! She is performing at the North Carolina Dance Festival at 8PM in the work of Kira Blazek-Ziaii on Oct 19th at The Durham Fruit Company. My show of the Durham Dances photographs and book will begin at 5:30PM at the Fruit also on Oct 19th. I’m so excited for the book to be finished! Kristin’s work, TWO, will be also performed with NCDF, but in Asheville at the BeBe Theater on October 4 & 5 and then in Greensboro at the GreenHill Gallery on November 8. Kristin will perform in Kira’s work again in Greensboro at the Van Dyke Performance Space on November 9.

My body gave me a voice that could continuously inquire and discover anywhere. And it made my heart race (in a fantastic way) to do it in front of other people.
— Kristin Clotfelter

Where were you born and raised?

Dayton, OH

What type of dance do you practice?

The type that keeps me questioning what I'm doing. The more explicit answer -- improvisation

When did you start dancing?

3 years old

What made you keep going with dance?

My body gave me a voice that could continuously inquire and discover anywhere. And it made my heart race (in a fantastic way) to do it in front of other people.

What's your Durham connection?

My partner, James grew up here and we enjoy being near his family, still in the area. Apparently, he basically ran the theater department at Jordan High School while he was a student there. We live just down the road now.

Favorite things to do when not being a marvelous dancer?

I'd love to be reading all day long. But I mostly role play with my 4 year old, try to cook and bake as often as I can and crave outdoor activities.
