Welcome to the first Durham Dances full blog post! It features the incredible (and gorgeous) dancer, Anne Talkington, as well as the top photos from our session.
ABOUT THE DANCER:
First thing first, where are you from?
I was born in Richmond, VA, but grew up mostly in Fayetteville, NC. I moved to the Triangle when I started college.
When did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was 3 years old - I asked my parents if I could take ballet lessons, and I never looked back!
What type of dancing that you do?
Pretty much everything... I've trained in classical ballet most of my life, but I also do modern, contemporary, jazz, and tap!
What made you keep going with dance?
I don't think I could imagine my life without dance. I'd go stir crazy! It's what keeps me balanced, and it's always so rewarding even though it's not always easy. It's an investment, physically and emotionally, and you grow with it. My whole life, dance has been a gift that just keeps giving.
Favorite things to do when not being a marvelous dancer?
I'm in graduate school for computational biology, so my research keeps me pretty busy! I also love singing, musical theater, reading, gluten-free baking, going to the movies, spending time at the beach, and anything that involves hanging out with adorable animals.
I was excited to use two flashes and a high angle to create a noir effect above. Then all I had to do in the editing room was add contrast and switch to black and white.
I chose to shoot at the Corcoran Garage deck because of it's great views of the Durham skyline as well as to contrast the beauty of ballet with the urban environment and unglamorous parking deck. Also, over the years I have learned that parking decks and other industrial areas can provide very interesting linear compositions. We were also shooting rather late in the day, by which I mean the very end of the day and into the night time. That meant that I had the opportunity to play around with several lighting setups and Anne was a total sport and went along with all of my crazy ideas and poses, (thank you!).
Thanks Anne for an amazing shoot, I hope we can work together again soon!
